Child Psychologist Assessment

We understand that seeking an assessment for your child can be a sensitive step. At CY&A Psychology, we offer a thoughtful, collaborative process based on your child’s age, needs and developmental stage. Whether you are concerned about emotional wellbeing, behavioural challenges or neurodevelopmental differences, our experienced clinical psychologists are here to help.

From our welcoming practice in Marylebone, we work closely with children, young people and their families to make sense of difficulties and provide a clear way forward. Our assessments are not only clinically strong, but also grounded in care, compassion and deep respect for the child’s individuality.

What to Expect from a Child Psychologist Assessment

Every assessment begins with a conversation. We start by getting to know you and your child, understanding concerns, and identifying what has brought you to seek support now. Whether you have a referral or are self-initiating care, we listen without judgement and work at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Your initial appointment will involve a combination of discussion, observation and, where appropriate, structured questionnaires. This stage helps us gather a full picture of your child’s emotional, behavioural and developmental profile. From here, we explore what might be maintaining difficulties, and what might support meaningful change.

Our clinicians use this information to develop a shared understanding with you. The focus is not solely on ‘labels’ or diagnoses, but rather on understanding the child in context. We then outline a clear set of recommendations, including whether therapy is advised, and if so, which approach might be most suitable.

Who May Benefit from an Assessment?

Assessments are often helpful when parents, carers or schools have noticed persistent challenges. You may be seeking greater clarity about your child’s mood, anxiety levels, focus, learning profile or relationships. Equally, you may want a professional perspective before deciding next steps.

Some families come to us with specific concerns such as:

  • Emotional outbursts or persistent low mood
  • Difficulty settling at school or managing friendships
  • Signs of neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD or autism
  • Challenges following a difficult life event or transition
  • Behaviours that feel hard to manage at home or in the classroom

Whatever the concern, we offer a calm, supportive space to explore it. Our approach is not about rushing to conclusions, but about building a clear, informed understanding that supports your child’s wellbeing.

A Holistic, Evidence-Based Approach

CY&A Psychology draws on a wide range of clinical tools to inform assessment. These may include cognitive or behavioural measures, structured parent/carer interviews, classroom observations or age-appropriate assessment tasks. Our process is always adapted to suit the individual child’s pace, needs and preferences.

We take care to involve parents and carers throughout, and where helpful, work collaboratively with schools and other professionals. Our team values neurodiversity and takes a strengths-based approach in all our work. Every recommendation we make is based on evidence and informed by many years of direct clinical experience.

Assessments may form the starting point for therapeutic input, or they may simply offer clarity and direction. Either way, we aim to ensure that the process feels purposeful, respectful and anchored in your child’s best interests.
