Child Psychotherapy

At CY&A Psychology, we offer thoughtful, evidence-based support for children and families looking for child psychotherapy in London. We know that reaching out for help can happen at a stressful time, especially when your child is struggling and you are not sure what they need or where to begin.

Our practice is based in Marylebone, where we see children, young people, families and young adults in a calm and welcoming townhouse setting. We also offer online appointments, giving families more choice in how they access support. Our aim is to provide care that feels understanding, steady and well matched to your child’s age, stage and needs.

A Child-Centred Approach that Feels Personal

Child psychotherapy is not one fixed process. Each child brings their own experiences, strengths, worries and way of relating to the world. That is why our clinicians draw on a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches and adapt the work carefully to the child in front of them.

For some children, that may mean talking therapy with clear structure and goals. For others, it may involve more creative and engaging ways of working so that they can feel comfortable, understood and able to take part. Our team works with emotional difficulties, relational concerns and neurodevelopmental needs, always with care and professional judgement.

We also know that children do best when the adults around them feel supported too. Where helpful, we work closely with parents and carers so that therapy is not something that happens in isolation, but part of a wider process of support and progress.

How We Think About Assessment

Assessment is an important part of child psychotherapy because it helps us understand not only what is difficult, but also why those difficulties may have developed and what may be keeping them going. During the initial appointment, your clinician will take time to get to know your child and family with care and curiosity.

We explore the current concerns, relevant history, and the factors that may be affecting progress. We also look at what may be helping to stop things from becoming worse, as these strengths can be an important part of treatment. At this stage, we may use questionnaires as part of our information gathering and to help track change over time.

From there, we develop an individual treatment plan with you. We discuss goals, make recommendations, and agree on a sensible way forward, including a suggested number of sessions. Progress is reviewed informally every four sessions throughout care.

Evidence-Based Therapy for a Range of Needs

Our clinicians are trained in a wide range of therapies, including CBT, EMDR, ACT, Compassion Focused Therapy, Behaviour Therapy, ERP, Theraplay, Narrative Therapy, Family and Parenting Support, and other specialist approaches. This breadth of experience allows us to think carefully about what may be most helpful for each child and family.

We support children with worries, fears and anxiety disorders, OCD and related issues, low self-esteem, mood and emotional regulation difficulties, and difficult or distressing experiences. We also work with family relationships, parenting support, post-adoption support, ADHD, autistic spectrum conditions, tics and Tourette syndrome, learning disabilities, and other developmental or behavioural concerns.

Support from an Experienced Team

CY&A Psychology is a small practice of experienced clinicians with many years in child and family mental health services. Our work is grounded in evidence-based care, but the experience we offer is also warm, reassuring and welcoming.
