When you first contact a clinical psychologist, you may already have a concern in mind, or you may just feel that something isn’t quite right. Clinical psychologists are trained to help children, young people, and families understand those concerns, make sense of patterns, and find ways forward that feel realistic and manageable.

At CY&A Psychology, our clinical psychologists use structured approaches rooted in psychological theory, but always adapt to the needs of the individual. Whether your child is facing emotional, behavioural, or neurodevelopmental difficulties, the aim is to support meaningful, lasting change through thoughtful and collaborative work.

Understanding What You Need

Every child, teenager or family arrives with a different set of experiences. Clinical psychologists begin by listening carefully and asking the right questions. The first appointment usually focuses on building a clear understanding of what’s going on, how long it’s been a concern, and what you’re hoping for.

This is known as the assessment stage. It’s not about labelling or diagnosing in isolation, but about gathering information that will help us form a shared understanding. Some young people may benefit from standard questionnaires or structured tools, but we never rely on a one-size-fits-all approach. Clinical judgement plays an important role in identifying what kind of help will be most useful.

Building a Plan Together

Once we understand the situation, we work with you to set clear goals. These may be emotional, behavioural or family-based. The psychologist will then recommend a treatment plan based on your needs and preferences. This could include therapies such as CBT, ACT, EMDR or parenting-focused interventions, depending on the situation.

At CY&A Psychology, treatment is not rushed. The number of sessions varies depending on the complexity of the difficulty. We offer short-term input when that’s enough, or longer-term work if the challenges are more persistent. We also review progress regularly so that sessions remain focused and helpful.

Supporting Emotional Health With Clinical Expertise

Clinical psychologists work in a very structured, evidence-based way. They draw on up-to-date psychological research, while also considering developmental, relational and neurological factors. At the same time, they offer a space where young people feel heard and supported.

What sets a clinical psychologist apart is the ability to work across a wide range of presentations. This includes anxiety, low mood, OCD, trauma, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, ADHD, autism, tics and more. Sessions may involve one-to-one work, parent guidance, or whole-family involvement where helpful.
