Home » How to Improve Social Skills for Adults
Social situations do not come easily to everyone, and that is perfectly normal. Whether you find conversations draining, worry about being judged, or simply want to feel more at ease around others, social skills are something you can build at any age. At CY&A Psychology, we work with young adults and adults who want to feel more connected and more confident in the way they relate to the people around them.
Here are some of the approaches we find genuinely helpful.
Start with Small, Manageable Interactions
You do not need to transform your social life overnight. Confidence grows through repetition, so it helps to begin with low-pressure moments. A brief chat with a colleague, a question to a shop assistant, or a short message to a friend all count. Each small exchange gives you evidence that you can cope, and that evidence builds over time.
Notice the Thoughts that Hold You Back
Many people who struggle socially carry anxious predictions into every interaction. You might assume others are judging you or that you will say the wrong thing. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, one of the well-researched talking treatments we offer, helps you recognise these patterns and test whether they are actually true. Often they are not, and loosening their grip makes conversation feel far more natural.
Listen More than You Speak
Good social skills are less about being witty and more about making the other person feel heard. Ask open questions, show interest in the answers, and allow pauses without rushing to fill them. Listening well takes the spotlight off you and creates the kind of easy back and forth that strong connections are built on.
Practise Managing Discomfort
Some anxiety in social settings is expected, and trying to remove it completely can backfire. Approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy help you understand what matters to you and act on it, even when nerves are present. Learning to sit with discomfort, rather than avoid it, allows you to keep showing up in the situations that count.
Know When to Seek Support
If social difficulties are affecting your relationships, work or wellbeing, professional support can make a real difference. Our experienced Clinical Psychologists work with young adults using evidence-based interventions, delivered online or in person at our Marylebone townhouse.
