ERP involves exposure to the thoughts, images or situations that trigger your anxiety combined with making a choice and commitment not to engage in a particular response once the anxiety starts.
It is the effective component of CBT for OCD. It is also an effective treatment for tics and Tourette Syndrome. It is possible to learn to feel the urge and anxiety and not respond with the repetitive behaviour, with the anxiety naturally dropping over time.

FAQs
What Is Exposure And Response Prevention Therapy?
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a specialised, structured form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) considered the gold standard for treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). It is also used to help children, young people and young adults with tics and Tourette Syndrome. In relation to OCD and anxiety, the process involves gradually and intentionally triggering anxiety by exposing your child or adolescent to a feared stimulus while simultaneously preventing them from performing their usual ritual or avoidance behaviour.
Over time, the brain learns that the feared outcome is unlikely to occur and that the distress can be managed without the compulsion. Over time, children begin to feel more in control of their anxious feelings, learning that they can tolerate distress without needing to rely on rituals or repetitive behaviours.
How Is ERP Different From General Behavioural Therapy?
While general behavioural therapy addresses a wide range of emotional or behavioural concerns, ERP is a specialised form used specifically in treating OCD, Tics and Tourette Syndrome and certain anxiety disorders. It combines exposure to feared thoughts or situations with response prevention techniques, helping young people resist compulsions in a safe and guided setting.
By gradually facing fears under the support of a Clinical Psychologist trained and experienced in using CBT with ERP for OCD, children and young people learn that anxiety can reduce naturally, that they can cope with the discomfort of it, without relying on safety behaviours or rituals.
What Does A Typical ERP Session Look Like?
In ERP therapy sessions, our experience Clinical Psychologist will work with your child or young person to create a step-by-step exposure hierarchy. This will then involves gradually facing feared situations or intrusive thoughts while practising response prevention techniques, breaking the rules that have been controlling their behaviours and thoughts until the rules no longer seem to matter and your child or teenager is free of them.
Therapy sessions are collaborative and paced to suit your child or adolescent’s age and developmental stage. Over time, with repeated practice, anxious feelings reduce naturally or they learn to manage the discomfort, helping young people regain control over their life and reduce emotional distress linked to compulsive behaviours.
How do I know if ERP is right for my child?
ERP therapy is widely recommended by mental health professionals for treating obsessive compulsive disorder in children and adolescents. If your child experiences distressing intrusive thoughts, repetitive behaviours, or struggles with ritualistic routines, exposure and response prevention may be a suitable approach.
What should parents expect during ERP treatment?
Parents play an important role in supporting their child through exposure and response prevention. The therapist will explain how ERP requires patience and practice, as the child learns to tolerate uncertainty and reduce anxiety without engaging in compulsions.
Families can expect regular reviews of progress, clear explanations of the treatment plan, and reassurance that anxious feelings will lessen over time. With consistent support, ERP therapy can help young people manage OCD symptoms and move towards a greater sense of mental wellbeing.
