Behavioural or Behaviour Therapy is the term for interventions based on the principle that behaviours are learned through our interactions with environmental and internal stimuli.

These types of therapies are action orientated and a behaviour or behaviours are modified via specific tools and strategies. Many parenting programmes are behavioural in nature. The proactive and preventative principles of positive behaviour support can be useful when managing challenging behaviours.

FAQs

How Can Behaviour Therapy Support My Child’s Mental Health?

Behaviour therapy helps children turn emotional challenges into actionable skills. Focusing on the link between thoughts and actions, to identify patterns, it provides structured strategies to ease emotional distress, such as anxiety, manage outbursts and build confidence. By utilising structured techniques and teaching practical strategies, our Clinical Psychologists help children develop functional responses to triggers that typically lead to anxiety, low mood or behavioral outbursts.

This evidence-based approach is particularly effective for children diagnosed with ADHD, anxiety or depression. The goal is twofold: to reduce symptomatic behaviors and to equip the child with a ‘toolbox’ of self-regulation skills, ultimately leading to improved self-esteem and emotional resilience.

How Is Behaviour Therapy Different From Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

Behaviour therapy focuses on changing specific behaviour patterns via positive reinforcement (rewards, incentives and praise) and routine-based strategies, as well as clear consequences. It is often described as ‘learning by doing’. It helps children master practical responses to triggers to avoid unwanted outcomes such as temper tantrums, avoidance or non-compliance. It helps children to develop self-control, improve compliance and manage their responses to challenges.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) focuses on understanding the links between thoughts, feelings and behaviours. This therapy focused on identifying and restructuring unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, as well as modifying actions, in order to improve emotions. CBT is the treatment of choice for anxiety disorders, depression and mood disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Can Behaviour Therapy Help Children With ADHD?

Yes, behaviour therapy is often one of the first treatments recommended for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, especially for children under 6 years old. Behaviour therapy helps children by teaching them awareness of warning signs and triggers, helping them to master regulation strategies, improving self-control, engaging in positive actions and strengthening social skills.

It is most effective when delivered as parent training or in combination with parent training. Our clinical psychologists can help you as parents to use behavioural and CBT techniques to strengthen helpful behaviours and reduce unwanted behaviours. This helps your child develop more strategies to cope with ADHD and improves family life too.

Is Behaviour Therapy Effective for Children with Autism?

Behaviour therapy is one of the most widely researched supports for children on the autism spectrum. When practiced ethically and compassionately, it helps children gain independence and navigate a world that is not always built for their sensory or communication needs.

Behaviour therapy with our clinical psychologists focuses on giving children the tools to express their needs, which naturally reduces the frustration that leads to meltdowns (functional communication); daily living skills such as building the confidence to handle routines like dressing, hygiene or safety and emotional regulation, helping children recognise when they are overwhelmed and teaching them healthy ways to find calm.

Effective therapy respects a child’s unique way of experiencing the world. Our goal is to reduce distress, not to suppress the traits that make your child who they are. By focusing on strengths and providing structured support, we help children thrive on their own terms.

What CBT Techniques Are Used In Behaviour Therapy For Children?

Our clinicians can use CBT techniques within behaviour therapy. For children, these techniques are usually turned into games, visual aids or ‘missions’ to make them feel less like clinical work and more like skill-building. CBT techniques in behavioural therapy often include problem solving skills training; goal setting and using structure to improve wellbeing; use of role play to consolidate new skills; setting exposures and experiments to test out new ways of behaving or managing triggers. There are many ways CBT techniques can be utilised alongside behaviour therapy!
