Home » What Does a Clinical Psychologist Do?
Clinical Psychologists support people who are struggling with their emotional, behavioural, or developmental wellbeing. They are trained professionals who assess and treat a wide range of mental health difficulties using structured, evidence-based approaches.
Their work is grounded in psychology and supported by years of clinical training. But just as importantly, they bring warmth, empathy, and curiosity to understand each person’s unique experiences.
Clinical Assessment and Understanding
One of the key roles of a Clinical Psychologist is to understand the nature of the difficulties a person is experiencing. This starts with a thorough assessment. Your psychologist will spend time getting to know you and your child, ask questions about what’s going on, and gently explore what may be contributing to those challenges.
They may also use structured tools such as questionnaires or observations to gather more information. These assessments help form a clear picture, not just of the difficulty itself, but also of the individual’s strengths and needs.
Creating a Personalised Treatment Plan
Once the assessment is complete, the Clinical Psychologist will discuss their understanding of the situation with you. Together, you will set goals and agree on a treatment plan. The type of therapy recommended will depend on a number of factors, such as your child’s age, preferences and the nature of the concern.
At CY&A Psychology, we offer a wide range of evidence-based therapies. These include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), EMDR, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), family-based work and more. Our clinicians are experienced in adapting approaches to suit neurodivergent children, younger children and those who may be feeling anxious about therapy.
Providing Emotional and Practical Support
Clinical Psychologists also help children and families build skills, strengthen relationships and develop confidence. In many cases, therapy involves helping children make sense of their emotions, find ways to cope with worry or sadness, or manage behaviours that are getting in the way of everyday life.
We also offer parenting support and family sessions where needed. Our goal is to help the whole family feel more connected and better equipped to manage challenges.
Working with Care and Compassion
Perhaps most importantly, Clinical Psychologists work with a high level of care, respect and professional responsibility. Everything is carried out with the child’s best interests at heart. We take the time to build a relationship where the young person feels safe, seen and supported.
If you’re considering support for your child or family, speaking with a Clinical Psychologist can be a helpful first step. We’re here to listen, understand and offer guidance that is shaped around your needs.
