Never before have schools been under such pressures to attend to both the mental health and educational needs of their young people.
The Children’s Society ‘Good Childhood Report 2022’ shows that children’s happiness continues to decline. Now, five children in a classroom of 30 are likely to have a mental health problem. Surveys report that mental health is cited as a top concern by almost three-quarters of schools (70% of primary and 78% of secondary).
We are a specialist London-based team of child, adolescent and young people’s psychologists and psychotherapists, offering expert support to schools, families and organisations. Our highly qualified clinicians bring decades of experience across health and education in both the public and private sectors, including CAMHS, Children’s Social Care, and day and boarding schools. What sets us apart is our deep understanding of education: every member of our team has worked in schools as a teacher, a psychologist, or both, ensuring our work is practical, collaborative and grounded in the realities of school life.

Example Workshop Topics
The adolescent brain
Drawing on current psychological and neuroscientific research, the session explains why adolescence is a period of heightened sensitivity, risk-taking, emotional intensity, and rapid change — and how these changes are a normal part of development. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how the developing adolescent brain affects decision-making, impulse control, peer relationships, and emotional regulation. The workshop also considers the impact of stress, sleep, social media, and environmental factors on adolescent wellbeing. Importantly, the session bridges theory and practice by offering practical, compassionate strategies for supporting adolescents in everyday contexts.
Managing exam stress
Explore what stress and anxiety are, common triggers and how it presents in children and adolescents. Practical strategies are provided to help staff support pupils experiencing high levels of anxiety. We run this workshop for 11+; GCSE and A-Level age groups for parents/carers and separately for children/young people. We also run an adapted version of it for school staff.
Can’t go-won’t go: understanding and addressing the avoidance of school
Develop a comprehensive understanding of school avoidance- why some students can’t go (due to anxiety, developmental or neurological factors) and why others won’t go (due to fear, emotional regulation challenges, or avoidance patterns). The session emphasises the complex interplay of cognitive, emotional, social and environmental contributors to school avoidance, moving beyond simplistic labels to a compassionate, evidence-based framework. The workshop also focuses on practical intervention strategies that can be implemented within the school context such as, strength-based approaches to re-engagement and graded exposure; classroom and school adjustments; collaborative planning.
Understanding Body Image in Young People: Identification, Risk & School-Based Support
Develop a psychologically informed understanding of body image in children and young people; explore how body image concerns develop, how they may present in school settings and when they may indicate increased risk.
Participants will learn how to recognise early warning signs, respond appropriately to concerns and understand when and how to escalate safeguarding or referral pathways. Includes practical guidance to support confident, sensitive conversations with pupils and to strengthen whole-school responses to body image-related difficulties.
Self-Harm and Suicidal Ideation
A one-hour introductory workshop for professionals and parents.
Explores why young people self-harm and provides practical guidance to help keep children safe.

Workshop costs
Duration: 1 hour
£25 per person (online)

What Distinguishes CY&A Psychology in Schools?
CY&A Psychology brings a clinically led, formulation-driven approach to working with schools. Our work goes beyond training or advice alone; we help schools develop a deep psychological understanding of children, systems and risk, enabling confident, ethical and sustainable decision-making.
Clinically led and formulation-focused
All our work is underpinned by clinical formulation rather than checklists or generic strategies. We prioritise understanding why a child or situation is presenting as it is, considering developmental history, neurodiversity, attachment, trauma, family context and the school environment. This allows interventions to be targeted, compassionate and effective.
Depth of safeguarding expertise
Safeguarding is a core specialism within CY&A Psychology. We offer dedicated safeguarding supervision that supports Designated Safeguarding Leads and senior teams to reflect on complex cases, manage risk, process emotional impact and maintain professional judgement under pressure. Our safeguarding work supports not only compliance, but confidence, containment and a healthy safeguarding culture.
Integrated work with complex and high-risk situations
We are experienced in working with schools facing high-stakes challenges, including self-harm, suicidal ideation, aggression, serious incidents and complex neurodevelopmental profiles. Our risk assessment and critical incident pathways are designed to support schools swiftly, thoughtfully and collaboratively at moments of heightened concern.
Strong links to Tavistock-informed practice
Our clinical leadership draws on long-standing links with Tavistock-informed thinking, including psychodynamic, attachment-based and systemic approaches. This influences how we think about behaviour, relationships, organisational dynamics and staff wellbeing, and supports schools to move beyond behaviour management towards relational, psychologically informed practice.
Collaborative and respectful partnership with schools
We work alongside schools rather than “doing to” them. All of our team have worked in schools, either as teachers or as psychologists or both- we understand the context. Our approach values the knowledge, pressures and realities of educational settings and seeks to strengthen existing practice. We support schools to develop psychologically informed systems that are sustainable for staff as well as supportive for pupils.
Care for staff wellbeing and professional resilience
We recognise the emotional labour of working in education, particularly when supporting children with complex needs. Our consultation and supervision spaces are designed to support reflection, emotional processing and professional growth, helping staff remain thoughtful, regulated and resilient in demanding roles.
