Sometimes weekly therapy isn’t enough or you want to make some big strides forwards during a school holiday or during a period of leave from school, college or university.

Intensive therapy offers a focused, structured approach for children, adolescents, and young adults who need more support in a shorter period of time. At CY&A Psychology, our intensive therapy programmes are carefully designed to help young people make meaningful progress when difficulties feel overwhelming, urgent, or stuck.

We offer intensive therapy using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), delivered by experienced clinical psychologists.

What Is Intensive Therapy?

Intensive therapy involves multiple therapy sessions over a shorter timeframe, rather than weekly appointments spread over months. This allows for:

  • Deeper therapeutic focus
  • Faster momentum and continuity
  • Reduced time spent “re-settling” each session
  • Greater opportunity for skills practice and consolidation

Intensive therapy may take place over several days or weeks, depending on your young person’s needs and capacity.

Who Is Intensive Therapy For?

Intensive therapy may be helpful for children, adolescents or young adults who:

  • Are experiencing high levels of distress
  • Feel stuck despite previous therapy
  • Have experienced trauma or significant life events
  • Need support within a limited timeframe (e.g. school transitions, exams, return to education)
  • Struggle to engage with weekly therapy due to avoidance, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm

We carefully assess whether intensive therapy is appropriate and safe before starting. We have seen better outcomes in young people with higher motivation, an average or better attention span and moderate to severe symptoms.

Our Therapeutic Approaches

Fast Track Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

In intensive CBT, we have multiple sessions per week over a shorter schedule. Massed practice and exposure can increase learning and bolster treatment effects. It is really helpful if you need a rapid reduction in symptoms, maybe because of timescales (such as a return/reintegration to school or a need to complete treatment during a break). Our fast-track CBT focuses on:

  • Anxiety, phobias, and panic
  • Obsessive compulsive difficulties (OCD)
  • Emotional regulation and coping skills

The intensive format allows skills to be taught, practised and reinforced more consistently, helping changes feel more embedded.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is an evidence-based therapy for trauma and distressing life experiences.

EMDR intensive therapy can be particularly helpful when:

  • A young person has experienced single or repeated trauma
  • Distressing memories are interfering with daily life
  • Symptoms feel “stuck” or overwhelming

Intensive EMDR allows for careful preparation, processing and stabilisation, while maintaining strong therapeutic support throughout.

How Intensive Therapy Works

Every intensive therapy programme is individually tailored and typically includes:

  • A comprehensive assessment
  • Collaborative goal setting
  • A clear therapy plan detailing what will be worked on each day
  • Regular review and monitoring
  • Guidance for parents or carers (where appropriate)

Sessions are structured to prioritise emotional safety, regulation, and pacing; especially for younger clients.

We always tailor the programme to your child or young person’s interests and structure the sessions with physical activity breaks. We make exposure work fun, going to different locations and using play as a reward. We see young people enjoy becoming an expert in their treatment and teaching their parents/carers their new skills!

Young people leave the fast track programme with photographs and a document of their successes, to feel proud later, as well as being a reference guide to prevent relapse. We also offer booster sessions after the fast-track programme.

Working With Parents and Carers

When working with children and adolescents, we actively involve parents or carers where appropriate. This may include:

  • Psychoeducation
  • Guidance on supporting progress at home
  • Regular feedback and check-ins

Our aim is to support the whole system around the young person.

Is Intensive Therapy Right for You?

Intensive therapy is not suitable for everyone. It is most effective when:

  • The young person is not in acute crisis
  • There is motivation
  • The young person is able to pay attention
  • There is sufficient emotional and practical support
  • The approach is agreed collaboratively

If intensive therapy is not the right fit, we will always discuss alternative options.
