Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is an evidence-based treatment that uses a range of techniques to better understand what is important to you, how you interact with your own thoughts, how to accept the trickier less pleasant experiences and feelings if you cannot change them and learning mindfulness.
The overall aim is that by becoming more aware of the here and now (living in the present moment not in the past or worrying about the future) and being more able to control your behaviour to keep on track with what you care about and value then allows for positive actions and positive choices and reduces distress. ACT can be delivered creatively and playfully; lots of the exercises and activities can be acted out and the approach relies heavily on use of metaphor, which young people find helpful and connect well with. ACT is popular with our adolescent clients. All of our Clinical Psychologists practice ACT. More information can be found at https://contextualscience.org/act
