Clinical Psychologist Private Practice

At CY&A Psychology, our clinical psychologists are experienced in providing EMDR therapy for young people and families affected by difficult or distressing experiences. We work with care, patience and warmth to help children process what has happened and begin to feel safer in themselves and their world.

Our team is trained in EMDR and uses it where appropriate as part of an individualised treatment plan. We understand that starting therapy can feel daunting, and our aim is to offer a reassuring space where children, teenagers and families feel supported from the very beginning.

What Is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy shown to help individuals who have experienced trauma or upsetting life events. It works by helping the brain reprocess distressing memories in a way that allows them to become less intrusive over time.

Rather than focusing heavily on the details of an experience, EMDR supports the brain’s natural healing processes. It can be particularly useful for young people who may struggle to talk about what has happened or who feel stuck in patterns of anxiety, fear or avoidance. Our clinicians explain each step clearly and at a pace that feels manageable for the child or young person.

When Might EMDR Be Recommended?

EMDR may be considered when a child or young person is finding it difficult to move past a distressing memory or event. This could include experiences such as accidents, medical trauma, bullying, loss, or exposure to frightening events. It may also be helpful where a child is experiencing ongoing anxiety, sleep difficulties, or emotional distress linked to past events.

At CY&A, EMDR is offered as part of a wider toolkit of therapies. Our clinical psychologists will first meet with you and your child to understand what is going on, and whether EMDR may be a helpful approach. If it is, we will talk through how it works and what to expect, and always take time to answer any questions you may have.

A Flexible and Thoughtful Approach

We know that EMDR needs to be delivered carefully, with strong foundations in place first. That’s why we spend time building a trusting relationship with your child and designing the work to suit their needs, age and developmental stage.

Sessions can take place either online or at our welcoming townhouse in Marylebone, where we’ve created a calm, child-friendly environment. Our clinicians are experienced in adapting EMDR for younger clients and will guide each stage of the process thoughtfully and sensitively.

Speak to a Clinical Psychologist About EMDR

If you’re wondering whether EMDR might help your child or teenager, we’re here to listen. You don’t need to have a formal diagnosis or specific treatment request, just a concern you’d like to talk through. Our team will help you decide whether EMDR, or another evidence-based therapy, may be right for your family.
